BANGKOK, Sept 16 (TNA) – The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) declared Doi Chiang Dao in Chiang Mai as a new biosphere reserve.
The International Coordinating Council of Unesco’s Man and the Biosphere Programme meeting reviewed 22 areas including Doi Chiang Dao to be listed as biosphere reserves in its online meeting for the 33rd session in Abuja Nigeria.
The limestone mountain, Doi Chiang Dao is Thailand’s third-highest peak, covering a watershed area that drains water into the Ping River. Its ecosystem has been protected by the Chiang Dao Wildlife Sanctuary for more than 40 years. It has potential in terms of ecotourism and a model for visitor impact management is implemented strictly particularly along the nature study trail on the top of Chiang Dao mountain.
It is home to protected wildlife such as gorals and serows and is a habitat of 672 animals and more than 2,000 plants or 20 percent of plants in Thailand. (TNA)
