BANGKOK, Dec 23 (TNA) — The governor of the Bank of Thailand (BoT) expects the national economy to expand by 2.8% next year due to government budget disbursement and investment in mega infrastructure projects.
BoT governor Veerathai Santiprabhob said in the Thailand Economic Outlook seminar at InterContinental Hotel that the economic growth rate would be better next year compared with 2.5% this year because the 2020 budget bill would pass the parliament, megaprojects were making progress and many more investment projects would follow including 5G communication networks and projects related to financial institutions.
He denied the speculation that the economy next year would be worse than this year.
However, Mr Veerathai said he was not satisfied with the 2.8% growth projection because the Thai economy actually had potential to grow by 3.5-4% a year.
In the seminar, he also said that next year would see major changes namely the growth of the aging society, climate change and technological development.
Thailand should produce products for elderly people and improve its farm products as the climate change would reduce the productivity of the major food sources in the world, Mr Veerathai said. (TNA)
