NEW YORK, Sept 27 (TNA) — The United Nations credited Thailand for spearheading fights against illegal fishing.
The credit came during the first ASEAN-Pacific meeting on anti-illegal fishing cooperation in New York.
Peter Thomson, UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for the Ocean, said during the meeting that the Thai government’s fights against illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing won recognition from the European Union.
Besides, Thailand, as the chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, initiated the ASEAN General Fisheries Policy and the ASEAN Network for Combating IUU Fishing, he said.
Mr Thomson said he would report the achievements of Thailand to the Food and Agriculture conference in Rome in late November.
Meanwhile, Alongkorn Polabutr, adviser to the Thai Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister, said the ASEAN-Pacific meeting on anti-illegal fishing cooperation agreed with joint efforts to guarantee food security.
It was a major step of cooperation among 10 ASEAN member states and 16 Pacific countries, he said.
Mr Alongkorn added that he met Susi Pudjiastuti, Indonesian Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, and she proposed tax privileges for Thailand’s co-investment in fisheries in Indonesia. (TNA)
