BANGKOK, July 29 (TNA) – Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to an immediate ceasefire and a halt to all troop movements along their shared border.
This significant de-escalation, announced by Royal Thai Army Spokesperson Major General Winthai Suvaree, follows coordinated discussions held today across three key border regions, preceding a crucial General Border Committee (GBC) meeting scheduled for August 4.
The series of meetings, all commencing simultaneously this morning, aimed at stabilizing the border situation.
Commanders from the Thai 1st Army Area and Cambodian Military Region 5, along with those from the Chanthaburi and Trat Border Defense Command and Cambodian Military Region 3, agreed to suspend troop activities and establish direct communication channels.
The most comprehensive outcome stemmed from the meeting between Thailand’s 2nd Army Area and Cambodia’s Military Region 4, where a detailed seven-point plan was adopted. This plan includes a complete ceasefire, protection of civilians, and no troop reinforcements and movements that could heighten tensions.
Both sides also committed to facilitating the return of casualties and forming a joint coordination team to ensure prompt and effective resolution of local issues.
Major General Winthai confirmed that a full ceasefire was already in effect along the entire border prior to today’s discussions, with these new agreements set to be presented at the upcoming GBC meeting for high-level endorsement. -819 (TNA)
