BANGKOK, Feb 5 (TNA) – Thailand cuts power supply to five locations along the Myanmar border on Wednesday as part of its crackdown on call center scam operations.
Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul observed the operation which took effect from 0900 local time, targeted areas known for housing scam operations across three Myanmar states: Shan, Karen, and Mon.
The affected areas include two locations connecting Mae Sai district in Chiang Rai province to Tachileik in Shan State, two points linking Mae Sot district in Tak province to Myawaddy in Karen State, and one location connecting Sangkhla Buri district in Kanchanaburi province to Payathonzu in Mon State.
Interior Ministry Permanent Secretary Ansit Samphantharat, who chairs the Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA) board, and PEA Governor Supachai Eak-un witnessed the operation.
Thailand will also suspend internet services and fuel supplies to these border areas.
The East Asian Affairs Department of the Foreign Ministry has notified the Myanmar government of these measures and informed Myanmar medical facilities to prepare for the supply disruptions.
The measures represent Thailand’s latest effort to combat transnational crime syndicates operating scam centers along its border with Myanmar. -819 (TNA)
