LAMPHUN, Jan 31 (TNA) – Political parties continue to woo voters in the final stretch of the campaign for the Provincial Administrative Organization (PAO) elections in 47 provinces across Thailand, scheduled for Saturday (Feb1) as this local election will reflect on national politics.
Former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, a campaign helper for the ruling Pheu Thai Party, Thursday morning was in Lamphun Province helping campaign for Anusorn Wongwan, a candidate for Lamphun PAO chief. Before his speech, he gave an interview expressing confidence that Pheu Thai Party candidates nationwide would win more than half the seats. He showed no concern about questions regarding his eligibility as a campaign helper potentially leading to yellow or orange cards for candidates.
Thaksin also mentioned that the government is working to address the call center scam issue based in Myanmar, saying they need to expedite cutting off electricity and signals. He noted that even legitimate contracts can be terminated if misused. Additionally, he has had informal discussions with Chinese senior officials for assistance, given China’s significant influence over Myanmar.
Meanwhile, the opposition People’s Party was also campaigning in Lamphun. Chaithawat Tulathon, ex-leader of the disbanded Move Forward Party leader, and Pannika Wanich, Progressive Movement spokesperson, as campaign helpers, supported Weeradej Phuphisit, their PAO chief candidate, and PAO member candidates at Pa Rok Fa Market in Pa Sang district, Lamphun.
When asked if their visit was intended to counter Thaksin’s presence, Chaithawat responded that they were simply campaigning in the final stretch to encourage Lamphun and Chiang Mai residents to vote. He viewed that elections are about citizens exercising their right to vote for what they believe best serves their needs.
The Election Commission expects PAO election results by 10 PM as all provinces are ready for Saturday’s election. For this election, voter turnout is expected to be at least 65%. -819 (TNA)
