BANGKOK, June 5 (TNA) – Minister of Justice, Pol. Col. Thawee Sodsong on Wednesday morning welcomed Pol.Col. Audie Sonny Latuheru, Head of the International Crime, Interpol Indonesia and his delegation, following the successful extradition of the fugitive inmate Chaowalit Thongduang, alias “Sia Paeng Nanod ” to Thailand.
The Justice Minister expressed his gratitude to the Indonesian government for their cooperation and praised the work of the Indonesian police in apprehending Chaowalit swiftly.
He emphasized that this successful extradition is a testament to the strong cooperation between the two countries and a significant step in combating transnational crimes.
Pol.Col. Audie stated that Indonesia is committed to cooperating with Thailand and will do its utmost to assist in the extradition of Thai fugitives. He expressed hope that Thailand would reciprocate by cooperating with Indonesia’s requests for extradition.
The Justice Minister explained that Chaowalit will be held at Bang Kwang Central Prison due to the risk of escape attempts. New charges against him for his recent escape are being investigated, and he was brought to Bangkok for questioning and to prevent further offenses. He will have the same rights as other inmates, including visitation and access to legal counsel.
When asked about the drug network that supported him, the Justice Minister stated that they have information but need to meet with the Indonesian authorities to discuss it further.
The Indonesian government has assured Thailand that it will not allow its territory to be used as a safe haven for drug traffickers. Additionally, Thailand will apprehend any fugitives seeking refuge in the country.
The Justice Minister reiterated that Chaowalit will be treated fairly and in accordance with the evidence. If the evidence is sufficient, legal proceedings will follow.
Pol. Lt. Col. Shane Kanchanapach, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Corrections, explained that Chaowalit will be held in solitary confinement to prevent him from interacting with other inmates and for his own safety due to potential threats.
He added that the drug trafficking allegations are under investigation, and they will refrain from disclosing details to prevent suspects from fleeing.
The details of the case will be discussed further, and an investigation is underway to determine if Chaowalit is part of an international drug trafficking ring. -819 (TNA)
