BANGKOK, July 3 (TNA) – The Pheu Thai Party may nominate Prachachart Party leader Mr. Wan Muhamad Noor Matha as the compromise candidate for the House Speaker post, according to news reports.
Two coalition allies, the Pheu Thai party and the Move Forward party are still under negotiation to resolve the dispute over the House Speaker’s seat.
Asked about the report on the possible nomination of Mr. Wan Muhammad Noor Matha by the Pheu Thai Party, the Pheu Thai list-MP Suriya Juangrungruangit on Monday said he believed it could be a good solution. Initially, it is understood that Pheu Thai might propose Mr. Wan Muhamad Noor Matha. As for whether the Move Forward Party will accept this proposal or not, Suriya did not answer this question.
The decision will be made by Pheu Thai MPs and the party’s executive committee in the party’s meeting today.
Mr. Wan Muhamad Noor Matha, 79 has previous experience serving as the House Speaker from 1996-2000. He was the first Muslim Thai to hold this position in history and was recognized for his achievements and respected by Members of Parliament.
Meanwhile, Mr. Wan Muhamad Noor Matha said that he personally did not aspire to hold the position from the beginning and not even a ministerial position as he used to serve in both positions.
He said Pheu Thai and MFP have suitable candidates. However, he is willing to accept it if it is necessary for the progress of democracy. He emphasized that he must listen to the voices of the MFP and the people.
If he takes the post to contribute to the legislative process and support the government’s work, as well as work for the people in the final term of the political arena, he will be happy to do so. He reiterated that he did not seek to undermine anyone and reaffirmed his support for the majority’s choice. (TNA)
