BANGKOK, Aug 15 (TNA) – The joint sitting of House representatives and senators lacked its quorum and the calculation of list MPs by dividing list MP votes with 100 replaces the calculation with the 500 divisor.
The joint sitting was organized today which was the 180-day deadline for the calculation method with the 500 divisor to be passed. The lack of the quorum resulted in the parliament passing the original calculation method with the 100 divisor instead.
The parliamentary session today was chaired by Parliament President Chuan Leekpai.
At 10.09am Mr Chuan opened the meeting as 165 senators and 200 House representatives signed their names as attendees.
However, the parliament could not proceed with a vote on the calculation method with the 500 divisor because only 353 members of the parliament confirmed their intention to vote. Their number did not reach half the MPs.
Mr Chuan ended the meeting at 10.28am and said that the 500-divisor method was dropped and the original 100-divisor version was passed.
The parliament president will seek opinions on the election bill from the Election Commission and then submit it through the prime minister for royal approval. However, the process will be suspended if the Constitution Court is asked to rule on the legality of the bill. (TNA)
