BANGKOK, Oct 21 (TNA) — Transport Minister Saksayam Chidchob has ordered the Land Transport Department to study his idea to have all new private cars and motorcycles equipped with GPS tracking devices to boost road safety and compliance with traffic rules.
The minister said while visiting the department that GPS tracking devices should be installed on private cars and motorcycles at their factories. The idea had been discussed with the Industry Ministry and automobile manufacturers and in public hearings. The Land Transport Department would finish its study on the idea within a year, Mr Saksayam said.
“GPS tracking devices on vehicles will have access to traveling data. This requires the consent of motorists. In the future there will be big data for the supervision of road safety. The Land Transport Department will monitor the data,” he said.
He also ordered the department to study an idea to share with informants 10% of fines collected from the operators of public transport vehicles who break laws. He wanted a report on the study in a month.
He also assigned the department to study a system to deduct points of the motorists who breach traffic rules. Repeated deduction could lead to the permanent revocation of bad drivers’ licenses, the minister said. (TNA)
