NEW YORK, Sept 26 (TNA) – Thailand, as ASEAN chair, is
committed to building strong partnership within and outside the region, Thai
Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha says at the Asia Society in New York.
Gen Prayut gave his address on Advancing Partnership for
Sustainability on Wednesday at the Asia Society lunch talk held in conjunction
with the 74th United Nations General Assembly.
In its capacity as the current chair of ASEAN, Thailand has
forged partnership among ASEAN members and promoted the bloc’s role in
strengthening cooperation with countries in the Indo-Pacific region.
“Advancing Partnership for Sustainability” is also the theme
of Thailand’s 2019 ASEAN chairmanship, the prime minister said.
Gen Prayut underscored promoting partnership within ASEAN
and with dialogue partners and the global community to achieve the goals of
sustainable security, economic growth, green economy, and sustainable
development.
On his government’s performance, the Prime Minister said
during the past five years his administration had set the foundations needed to
improve the livelihoods of the majority of the Thai people and reduce social
and economic disparities.
The government had actively tackled the problems of human
trafficking and illegal, unregulated and unreported (IUU) fishing by amending
regulations and enacting laws, he said.
After the military junta’s political roadmap to restore
democracy was fulfilled with the general election in March, the country now had
democratically-elected government with a goal to push itself to become a
high-income country by the year 2036, said Gen Prayut.
Tom Nagorski, Executive Vice President of Asia Society, also
joined the discussion with Gen Prayut on Thailand’s perspective on the evolving
international landscape.(TNA)
