BANGKOK, July 15 (TNA) — The Department of Marine and Coastal Resources is investigating the frequent deaths of dugong in the sea off Krabi province while a marine scientist suspects killing for their teeth.
Jatuporn Buruspat, director-general of the department, said officials and veterinarians of the department were finding out the causes of the deaths, especially frequent dugong deaths off Krabi.
He also said that his department would intensify sea patrols to protect the animals.
The latest death was reported on Sunday morning when the carcass of a two-meter-long full-grown dugong was seen floating in the sea between Koh Pu island in Nua Khlong district and Koh Mai island in the provincial seat. It was the fifth dead dugong found lately.
The latest carcass did not bear any trace of direct assault and its teeth were lost, possibly being removed after its death, Mr Jatuporn said
Marine scientist Thon Thamrongnawasawat said hunting for dugong teeth for superstitious beliefs could not be ruled out and authorities should mobilize resources to seriously protect dugongs as their deaths were abnormal.
In the past four months, five dugongs were found dead. (TNA)
