BANGKOK, Jan 25 (TNA) – Hazardous smog rose to unhealthy
levels in a large part of Bangkok Friday morning, as people are warned to avoid
outdoor activities including running events.
Air pollution in the capital affected many areas with levels
of fine dust particle PM2.5 over safety limit in 12 districts.
The Public Health Ministry called a meeting of officials in
five provinces in Bangkok’s vicinity to elaborate on pollution control measures
and health advisories for the residents.
Dr. Sukhum Kanchanapimai, Permanent Secretary of the Public
Health Ministry, said the Ministry urged organizers to suspend running events
until air quality improved.
“Runners especially in marathon need 10 times more oxygen
than normal. Running in unhealthy smog condition for a long period of time is
very harmful,” he said.
The levels of PM2.5 – airborne particulates 2.5 microns or
less in diameter – have exceeded safety level of 50 micrograms per cubic meter
of air for weeks prompting various agencies to implement measures to tackle the
problem.
Many private schools and kindergartens across Bangkok have
suspended their classes this week due to health concerns.
There has been a call for Bangkok Metropolitan
Administration to declare the capital a “nuisance problem control area” under
the Public Health Act to allow more effective actions.(TNA)
