BANGKOK, August 8 (TNA) – Thailand’s consumer confidence
index in July dropped to its lowest in 22 months amid concerns over economic
problems, political instability and the US-China trade war.
The University of Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC) revealed
on Thursday that consumer confidence index in July slumped to 75.0, dropping
for five straight months.
UTTC rector Saowanee Thairungroj said several negative
factors, including the trade dispute, high concerns about the Thai political
situation and low economic crops’ prices, adversely impacted the consumers’
confidence.
Thanawat Polvichai, director of the UTTC’s Centre for
Economic and Business Forecasting, said the index in July was the lowest in 22
months since October 2017.
He pointed out that the key factors were also the slow
rebound of the economy, the Bangkok blasts and declining foreign tourist
arrivals. Gloomy economic outlook
decreased consumers’ spending, said Mr. Thanawat.
If these conditions continued, Thailand’s economic growth
might not reach the target of 3.2-3.5 percent, he noted. (TNA)
