BANGKOK, April 16 (TNA) — Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha voiced his sorrow and solidarity with the French people as fire ravaged the iconic Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris on Monday, causing the spire of the historic structure to crash to the ground.
Deputy government spokesman Werachon Sukondhapatipak quoted Gen Prayut as saying that it was very sad news that the terrible fire that has devastated the Cathedral of Notre Dame, causing the huge damage to the sacred cathedral.
He said the 12th-century cathedral is a symbol of France and one of the world’s great heritage. Gen Prayut added that he was confident that the government of France and French people could jointly successfully restore the priceless iconic landmark very soon.
The Notre-Dame Cathedral, situated on an island in the Seine River in the heart of Paris, is one of the world’s most visited tourist destinations, drawing some 13 million people each year.
The fire broke out just before 7pm, minutes after the cathedral, which has been undergoing extensive renovation work.
The Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ twitter tweeted that there are no early reports of Thai nationals having been affected by the blaze at the Cathedral, whose central spire and much of the roof has collapsed. (TNA)
