BANGKOK, Dec 28 (TNA) – Millions of New Year travelers
flood highways and transport hubs making their journey to spend holidays with
their families.
On Friday morning, the highways connecting Bangkok with
other provinces were crowded with migrant workers and tourists headed for their
hometowns and tourist destination to celebrate New Year.
Mitraparp Highway, north of Bangkok, has been congested
since Thursday, as travelers make their way to northeastern provinces. Junctions in Nakhon Ratchasima province, the
gateway province to the Northeast, have seen heavy traffic.
Further north in Khon Kaen, road construction hampers
traffic flow, causing congestion over a stretch of 1 kilometer.
For northbound traffic on Asian Highway in Ayutthaya
continuing on to Nakhon Sawan has also been slow due to overwhelming number of
vehicles
Like during other major holidays, Thai authorities have
urged motorists to take detours and alternative routes while enforcing strict
traffic regulations.
It is a busy time of the year for public transport services
to facilitate New Year travelers.
Operators need to provide extra services to handle high
number of passengers. Transport Company,
the government-run bus operator, has arranged more buses at stations including
that in Chiang Mai.
All across the country, related agencies are coordinating
implementations of road safety campaign to reduce risk factor causing traffic
accidents and casualties. (TNA)
