SUMUT PRAKAN, Dec 21 (TNA) – Customs officials
seized 700 kg. of European eels or glass eels, worth more than 40 million baht at
Suvarnabhumi Airport.
European eels were sent from Romania in two
shipments on Dec 19 and 20. They were hidden in consignments, declared as
frozen shrimps.
Officials presumed that traffickers used Thailand as
the transit to transport the endangered species to other countries, where the eels
are prized delicacy.
The importing country will be questioned to locate
the recipients and track the eel traffickers.
European eel population in Europe has decreased by
95 per cent in the past 40 years. Netherlands issued the law in 2009 to ban
catching the fish for trade from October to November to save them from
extinction. (TNA)
