BANGKOK, Nov 29 (TNA) – The United Nations Organization for Education, Science and Culture (UNESCO) has listed Thai Khon masked dance drama as intangible cultural heritage for humanity.
The 13th session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage officially added Thailand’s Khon masked dance drama in its Intangible Cultural Heritage List at yesterday’s meeting in Mauritius, said Culture Minister Vira Rojpojchanarat.
The Department of Cultural Promotion has planned various activities for next year to celebrate the UNESCO listing and to honor HM Queen Sirikit, who has played an important role in preserving and developing the Khon performing art. Khon performances will be held in Bangkok and provinces.
Her Majesty the Queen of the late His Majesty King Bhumibol ordered improvement in costumes, set and props and the use of modern techniques to make the magnificent show on the stage.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha posted a message on his instagram account with a photo of young Khon performers, saying the Khon performance is listed by UNESCO as the cultural heritage for young generation to study Thai culture.
He honours Her Majesty Queen Sirikit for her contributions to preserve, revive and promote the exquisite Khon performances.
Khon masked dance drana involves graceful dance movements, instrumental and vocal renditions and glittering costumes.
It depicts the Ramayana epic, which is the story of the hero and incarnation of the god Vishnu, who brings order and justice to the world. (TNA)
