BANGKOK, Nov 23 (TNA) – Tesco Lotus will stop using plastic bags at its 2,000 stores nationwide on Dec 4, the Thai Environment Day.
Salinla Seehapan, corporate affairs director of Tesco Lotus, said Tesco Lotus implemented the project together with Siam Cement Group (SCG), the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, and retailers.
Under the project, participants will stop handing plastic shopping bags to customers and encourage them to use cloth bags instead at 2,000 branches of Tesco Lotus. Besides, it will support SCG in producing paper bags from recycled paper and paper boxes.
She said Tesco Lotus had given reward points and discounts of one baht per receipt to customers who did not seek plastic bags and consequently it managed to reduce the consumption of plastic bags by at least 100 million units.
Thanawong Ariratchakun, president of SCG’s Packaging Business, said SCG would produce paper bags from used paper boxes received from Tesco Lotus stores for environmental sake. (TNA)
