BANGKOK, May 21 (TNA) – Former foreign minister Surapong Tovichakchaikul died of lymphoma at the age of 67.
Former Pheu Thai MP for Chiang Mai was the foreign minister during the tenure of prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra from 2011-2014.
His lawyer, Preecha Sricharoen said he was treated for liver cancer at hospital late last year and attended his son’s wedding in November before his condition worsened earlier this year.
He had been in the intensive care unit (ICU) for four months before he succumbed to death at Siriraj Hospital. He donated his body for medical studies.
Surapong was born on May 1, 1953 in Chiang Mai and was a relative of former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra as his aunt married Thaksin’s uncle.
Last year, the Supreme Court’s Criminal Division for Holders of Political Positions handed down a suspended two-year jail term and a fine of 100,000 baht to him for reissuing a passport to fugitive former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra. (TNA)
