BANGKOK, Jan 15 (TNA) – Unsafe levels of smog have been
measured in several areas across Thailand on Wednesday, prompting authorities
to warn against outdoor activities.
The Pollution Control Department reported high level of
PM2.5, particulate matter 2.5 micrometers and less in diameter, rising to 54
micrograms per cubic meter in Nakhon Sawan city in central Thailand.
It issued a warning of unsafe fine-dust level for residents
to avoid outdoor activities.
The main cause of the pollution exceeding the safety
threshold of 50 micrograms per cubic meter was burning of farm waste at sugar
cane plantation, said the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office.
Similar problem has plagued many parts of Thailand’s north
and northeast as weather pattern exacerbates the situation.
In Bangkok, smog continues to drop thanks to rain showers in
the last couple of days. PM2.5 levels
ranged from 23-53 micrograms per cubic meter on Wednesday.
Bangkok residents were afflicted by unsafe fine-dust levels
for over a week.
Traffic police and law enforcement agencies have vowed to
strictly enforce traffic and pollution control regulations.(TNA)
