CHON BURI, Sept 5 (TNA) – Thailand celebrated 54th
birthday of the famous hippopotamus “Mae Mali” at a zoo in the eastern Chon
Buri province on Wednesday.
The country’s oldest hippo has been relocated to Khao Kheow
Open Zoo in Chon Buri along with some 140 animals from Bangkok’s Dusit Zoo
which was closed last year.
Mae Mali, meaning mother jasmine, enjoyed special treats
including a cake and her favourite fruits.
Visitors and students sang Happy Birthday Song to the hippo which has
given birth to 14 offspring.
Six of Mae Mali’s calves are being raised at Khao Kheow Open
Zoo.
Mae Mali was just one year old when Tilburg Zoo in the
Netherlands gave her to the Zoological Park Organization of Thailand in 1967.
