NONTHABURI, Aug 26 (TNA) – Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha is concerned about the very high price of glutinous rice and has ordered the Commerce Ministry to solve the problem.
Government spokesperson Narumon Pinyosinwat said Gen Prayut ordered the Commerce Ministry to cope with the historically high price of glutinous rice.
Deputy Prime Minister and Commerce Minister Jurin Laksanawisit ordered the Department of Internal Trade to prevent the hoarding of glutinous rice and discuss with rice millers and traders as well as rice farmers’ cooperatives the production of glutinous rice packs with a price discount to help consumers, Mrs Narumon said.
The government would also work out solutions for the future because the problem resulted from drought which reduced local yields of glutinous rice, the spokesperson said.
She expects the problem to be relieved when the new yield of glutinous rice is produced from October onwards. (TNA)
