BANGKOK, Aug 22 (TNA) – A school for elderly inmates
has been opened inside a Bangkok prison, aimed at enabling prisoners to adapt
to changing social environment.
The Corrections Department on Thursday launched the
programme in collaboration with the Public Health Ministry, the Education
Ministry and the Labour Ministry.
Pol Col Narat Sawetanan, director-general of the Corrections
Department said that the school for elderly inmates at Klong Prem prison
provided a three-month course for a class of 50 inmates.
The inmates aged 60 or over could learn and develop skills
on health, social and economic issues, he said.
It is designed in line with the aging society as over 18
percent of 66 million Thais are over 60 years of age.
Of about 350,000 inmates at correctional facilities in the
country, there were 6,268 inmates who were over 60 years old, according to Pol
Col Narat.
This group of inmates could enroll in the course on a
voluntary basis, he said.
Classroom inside Klong Prem prison will open its door to
qualified inmates for classes and workshops two days a week.(TNA)
