BANGKOK, OCT 18 (TNA) – Professor Emeritus Dr. Afaf I.
Meleis wins the Princess Srinagarindra Award 2018 for her contribution to
nursing, healthcare, and public health.
HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn presided over the award
presentation ceremony on Wednesday at the Grand Palace.
According to the Princess Srinagarindra Award Foundation,
Dr. Meleis has demonstrated her continued dedication and perseverance in
advancing nursing science, cultivating the next generation of healthcare
leaders, advocating health and well-being of women around the world.
Dr. Meleis’ works ensure that the voice of vulnerable groups
is recognized, particularly women who are burdened by societal inequities, the
Foundation’s statement says.
The American doctor has contributed to setting up a doctoral
degree programme in nursing which later became the model for doctoral-level
nursing curricula around the world.
She has played an important role in the development of
doctoral nursing education, including Doctor of Nursing Science and Doctor of
Philosophy degrees and ensured that they attain a level of excellence.
She was also an adviser and lecturer for a doctoral degree
programme in nursing at Thailand’s Mahidol University, Chiang Mai University,
Khon Kaen University and Prince of Songkla University.
The Princess Srinagarindra Award Foundation was established
in October 2000 in commemoration of the centenary birthday anniversary of
Princess Srinagarindra, the mother of King Ananda Mahidol and King Bhumibol
Adulyadej, the eighth and ninth monarchs of Thailand’s Chakri dynasty.
The primary purpose of the Foundation is to confer the award
on an individual nurse or midwife or on a group of registered nurses and/or
registered midwife for outstanding performance and/or research in the field of
nursing for the benefit of mankind and for the wellbeing of the people.(TNA)
