Nay Pyi Taw, June 23 (TNA) – Thai Prime Minister Gen. Prayut Chan-ocha said on Tuesday the purpose of the establishment of the Ayeyawady-Chao Phraya-Mekong Economic Cooperation Strategy (ACMECS) is for cooperation and development on a sustainable basis for people in this region.
His remarks were made at the two-day meeting of ACMECS, started Monday at the Myanmar capital of Nay Pyi Taw, in which he said the meeting of the leaders of the countries was meant for their determination in continuing their cooperation which would bring about development for people living in this region on an equal basis.
“We shouldn’t stop our objectives after we enter the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC). We must look forward and move together in a stable way and use ACMECS as one of the mechanisms in encouraging every member country to achieve development goals of the U.N. Post 2015 Development Agenda”, said Gen. Prayut.
He said the Thai government is determined to encourage and give support under ACMECS and ASEAN cooperation to achieve stability and wealthy for its people.
The success of ACMES could become the foundation of AEC and, therefore, this is the right moment to point out cooperation direction of ACMECS which could bestow the benefit for AEC as much as possible, Gen. Prayut said.
ACMECS is a cooperation framework among the three Indochinese countries — Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam – Myanmar and Thailand. It aims to utilise member countries’ diverse strengths and to promote balanced development in the sub region.
Former Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra initiated the establishment of this cooperation framework in April 2003. (TNA)
