CHONBURI, April 23 (TNA) – Thai authorities have raided two steel factories in Chonburi province, uncovering continued illegal operations despite previous shutdown orders due to the production of substandard steel and pollution from induction furnaces.
The joint operation, involving the Ministry of Industry and consumer protection police, targeted Chonburi Special Steel Group and its investor, Teng Feng Steel, following resident complaints.
The use of induction furnaces is a significant concern as they face potential delisting of industrial standards due to inconsistent product quality.
During the inspection, authorities found active steel production and seized over 582 tonnes of steel bars valued at 11.53 million baht.
Consequently, Chonburi Special Steel Group faces charges including defying official orders, unauthorized expansion, and conspiracy to produce substandard steel, carrying potential imprisonment and fines. Teng Feng Steel is accused of unauthorized production and misuse of industrial standards marks, also facing severe penalties.
Furthermore, six Chinese workers without work permits were apprehended at the factories and will be deported.
The Ministry of Industry is considering referring the case to the Department of Special Investigation. -819 (TNA)
