RATCHABURI, Sept 2 (TNA) — The Thai armed forces will send 273 military officers to support the peace-keeping mission of the United Nations in South Sudan.
Maj Gen Theerapong Patamasing Na Ayutthaya, spokesman of the Royal Thai Armed Forces, said that the officers formed the second lot of Thai military personnel for UN’s peace-keeping mission in South Sudan.
Gen Pornpipat Benyasri, chief of defence forces, presided over a ceremony to extend the best wishes to the 273 military officers at the Engineer Department in Ratchaburi. They will replace the first lot of Thai military personnel who had worked in South Sudan since December 2018.
According to the spokesman, the new team would leave on Sept 21 on a chartered flight of the UN. Prior to that, the personnel will undergo 14-day quarantine and be tested for COVID-19 to ensure that they are free of the disease.
When they arrive in South Sudan, they will be subject to another 14-day quarantine process at a UN facility.
The UN chose Thai military personnel for their unique capabilities of introducing sustainable development projects while carrying out strategic operations, the spokesman said. (END)
