BANGKOK, Sept 4 (TNA) – The Puea Thai Party has officially confirmed its nomination of Chaikasem Nitisiri for Thailand’s 32nd Prime Minister, with the vote scheduled for tomorrow, September 5.
In a “final offer” to resolve the political deadlock, the party announced that if Chaikasem is elected, the House of Representatives will be dissolved immediately after the new government delivers its policy statement to Parliament.
Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai confirmed he had submitted a draft royal decree for the dissolution of the House, but has since withdrawn it. He stated the draft was returned for legal review, as questions arose over whether an acting prime minister has the authority to make such a request.
Phumtham said the move was intended to return power to the people and end the current political impasse. He clarified that the draft will not be resubmitted, given the upcoming prime ministerial vote.
Puea Thai’s offer presents a clear choice for other parties. It aims to bypass the four-month wait that was a condition of a previous deal between the People’s Party and the Bhumjaithai Party, which saw the People’s Party agree to support the Bhumjaithai leader on the premise of an election within that timeframe. -819 (TNA)
