NAKHON NAYOK, Oct 7 (TNA) – The carcasses of six wild
elephants are being retrieved after they fell to their deaths at Haew Narok
Waterfall in Khao Yai National Park.
Park rangers have prepared boat and equipment for the trip
to Haew Narok (meaning hell abyss) Waterfall to retrieve the bodies of the six
wild jumbos.
The elephants apparently fell from the top of the waterfall
Saturday morning as they were trying to help a young calf drowned in waterfall
pool.
Head of ranger unit, Bangjong Boonpeng said on Monday the
team would take a boat from Khun Dan Prakan Chon Dam for about 40 minutes to a
creek near the waterfall. Then the team
would have to proceed on foot to reach the carcasses.
All of the work must be done by hands, he said, because the
dense jungle and rough terrain did not permit heavy machinery.
Earlier, two elephants of the herd were found to have
survived but they were struggling on a cliff.
Rangers later rescued them to safety on Saturday afternoon.
Haew Narok is the largest and one of the most picturesque
waterfalls inside Khao Yai National Park.(TNA)
