BANGKOK, May 13 (TNA) – The Council of Engineers has voiced its concern that very few students are studying engineering although the science is key to national development.
Suchatvee Suwansawat, president of the council, said on the occasion of its 20th anniversary that of the students who underwent university entrance examinations, only 5% chose to learn engineering and only 1% of them graduated.
That meant only 0.1% of students pursuing higher education graduated as engineers, he said.
Mr Suchatvee said the council would promote engineering at schools.
He also said that Thai engineers could not develop their own technologies like peers in Malaysia and Singapore and Thailand had to improve its engineering curricula.
Deputy Education Minister Udom Kachintorn said that engineers played important roles in national development and engineering curricula must catch up with the rapidly changing demand of markets. Engineers should also expand their knowledge in other sciences and social fields, he said. (TNA)
