BANGKOK, Jan 28 (TNA) – The Commerce Ministry and the Thai National Shippers’ Council are coaching Thai operators to cope with global trade challenges in 2019.
Oramon Sapthaweetham, director-general of the Commerce Ministry’s Department of Trade Negotiations, told a seminar on the Thai export outlook and trade war dynamics that situations related to the trade war between China and the United States might improve as both sides were trying to find the ways out.
However, she said, Thailand had to be prepared for impacts in case that the US reduced its trade deficit with China and China increased its import of American products and lowered its orders for products from other countries instead, she said.
Thailand would have to monitor trade situations closely to find out if its exports to China would be affected, Mrs Oramon said.
Meanwhile, the Commerce Ministry was securing new markets for Thai exports through free trade negotiations under the frameworks of ASEAN Plus 6 and the agreements with Turkey and Pakistan that were expected to take effect within this year or next year, she said.
She believed that exports would grow by at least 8% this year. (TNA)
