BANGKOK, Dec 3 (TNA) — The Ministry of Finance is seeking cabinet’s approval on a free mobile phone SIM cards to improve the livelihood of poor people.
Finance Minister Apisak Tantivorawong said a proposal was being finalized for the cabinet to approve free SIM cards to allow the poor access the information in the internet.
The aim is for these SIM cards is to allow the low income earners to access the vital online information sources that will allow them to improve their living situation and escape poverty.
The information included crop planting and agricultural commodity prices. The farmers can better manage their crop planting timetable to reduce oversupply.
The plan is two pronged with the first being granting greater free internet services for people who already have SIM cards of their own and the second giving out free SIM cards to those who do not have the means to access to mobile services.
The main impetus of the program is to provide access to news and information and not to grant free access to online movies, games or music.
The final details for the provision of the SIM cards is being considered by the Office of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission on the actual cost and viable internet connectivity. (TNA)
