BANGKOK, July 22 (TNA) – Local authorities in the northern province of Chiang Mai has planned to reserve raw water of about 3.9 million cubic metres for tap water production as parts of the province face a risk of drought.
Charin Kongsricharoen, Director of the Chiang Mai Irrigation Project said that rainfall scarcity caused waterways to drop and the western part of the city could face water shortage.
The water in the Mae Taeng canal, used for tap water production has dropped continuously , so the local irrigation office plans to use water reserve of about 3.9 million cubic metres from three reservoirs and seven water retention areas. The water reserve will be diverted into the tap water production system if the water crisis occurs.
Director of Mae Kuang Udom Thara dam, Jensak Limpiti said that the dam currently holds about 30 million cubic metres or about 11 per cent of its capacity. He has closely monitored the situation.
In the meantime, he ordered water resource survey to be conducted to ensure enough water supplies. Farmers are asked for cooperation to postpone rice and crop cultivation. (TNA)
