SURAT THANI, June 21(TNA) – Officials and veterinarians performed a necropsy on the carcass of Bryde’s whale, found drifting in the gulf of Thailand to determine the cause of its death.
A veterinarian team at the Marine and Coastal Resources Research and Development Center, the Central Gulf of Thailand (MMCRC) collected parts from the body of the 10- tonne male Bryde’s whale, estimated to have been 13-15 years old.
They said that the whale was in the stages between adolescence and adulthood and could have been dead for a few days.
Based on the examination, its head and tail was injured, possibly hit by fishing gear or a hard object.
After the necropsy, the bones will be exhibited at a museum in Tha Chana district, Surat Thani.
During the last few months, there have been three reports of Bryde’s whale’s deaths in Thailand. The first two whale carcasses were found in Samut Sakhon and Samut Prakarn.
Most of the whales died from sickness, being separated from the mother and suffering from starvation, getting tangled in a fishing net or being hit by a boat. (TNA)
