SA KAEO, April 23 (TNA) – Thailand-Cambodia Friendship
Bridge was inaugurated on Monday to become a new gateway for both countries’
trade and cooperation.
Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha and Cambodian Prime
Minister Hun Sen presided over the Ceremony Marking the Completion of the
Thailand – Cambodia Friendship Bridge connecting Thailand’s Ban Nong Ian and
Cambodia’s Stung Bot. It is the longest bridge for vehicles crossing Thailand and
Cambodia.
The 620-meter-long bridge was constructed with a Bt170
million grant aid from Thailand as part of the project to upgrade the Ban Nong
Ian – Stung Bot international point of entry.
Construction of the entire project is still underway to
build connecting road on the Cambodian side and customs buildings in both
countries, expected to be completed in 2022.
Gen Prayut congratulated the completion of the bridge, a
symbol of strong bilateral ties and urged both countries to work for speedy
completion of the remaining parts.
Thailand and Cambodia enjoyed a very close relationship and
would celebrate the 70th anniversary of their diplomatic relations next year,
the Thai premier said.
Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen thanked the Thai government
and people for supports in developing Cambodia’s infrastructure. This bridge served to bridge the hearts of
Thai and Cambodian peoples, he said.
After the ceremony, Prayut and Hun Sen also witnessed the
signing of the Agreement on Joint Traffic Working over Railway between Thailand
and Cambodia.
The Agreement outlines rules and regulations for Thailand
and Cambodia railway operation, according to the Foreign Ministry of Thailand.
Both countries hope that the new bridge and rail link will
facilitate the flow of goods and people between the two countries. (TNA)
