BANGKOK, March 27 (TNA) – The pro-military Palang
Pracharath Party (PPRP) is undaunted by its rival Pheu Thai Party’s move to
announce a coalition to form the next government.
PPRP held a press conference Wednesday afternoon after its
leader Uttama Savayanaya along with party executives and key members expressed
their thanks to voters at several locations in Bangkok.
Uttama reaffirmed his party’s stance to lead the country to
stability and maintain the path towards brighter future of the country.
He then told a press conference at the Party’s headquarters
stressing that the PPRP had continued to woo political allies.
But the Party would not reveal its alliance because the
official results had not been announced.
“We talked to different parties … trying to form a largest
coalition as possible,” he said.
When asked about the target of MPs the party looked for,
Uttama refused to answer saying the Election Commission (EC) had not endorsed
the candidates.
The PPRP would wait for official results before taking the
next move, he said.
Sonthirat Sonthijirawong, PPRP secretary, said claiming MPs
support at this early stage was simply political game to claim victory and
legitimacy to form a coalition government.
While claiming its legitimacy, Sonthirat repeated that the
party was not in a hurry and it would wait for official numbers from the
EC.
Earlier on Wednesday, Pheu Thai Party’s prime ministerial
candidate Sudarat Keyuraphan and leaders and representatives of six other
parties announced their coalition.
Exchanging alliance pacts, the Pheu Thai-led coalition
claimed that they would form an anti-junta coalition with 255 out of 500 seats
in the House of Representatives.
Thailand is still waiting for official results of the
Sunday’s election, the EC has said it would announce and endorse MPs within the
constitutional timeframe which falls on May 9.
The Pheu Thai Party has claimed victory in the election with
137 constituency lawmakers based on early results. But the PPRP who nominated coup leader Prayut
Chan-o-cha as prime ministerial candidate, disputes that it has the right to
form a coalition government since it has higher popular vote; 7.93 million
votes against 7.42 million.
Meanwhile, Bhumjaithai Party which is seen as a medium-sized
party who could take a kingmaker role, shrugs off reports that it had reached a
deal under the condition that its leader, Anuthin Chanweerakul, taking prime
ministerial post.
Suphachai Jaisamut, a Bhumjaithai Party executive, said his
party maintained that it would wait for official election results. (TNA)
