BANGKOK, March 4 (TNA) – Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has ordered relevant organizations to cope with drought and asked people to reduce water consumption.
Deputy government spokesman Werachon Sukondhapatipak said Gen Prayut was concerned about the drought that already started. He received reports on low levels of water reserved at dams as rising temperatures increased vaporization. However, there would be enough water for consumption until May, he said.
The prime minister ordered relevant organizations including the Agriculture and Cooperatives Ministry and the Office of National Water Resources to quickly work out water management to cope with drought.
He also asked general people and farmers in irrigated areas to minimize water consumption and grow plants that consume less water. For non-irrigated areas, officials would survey water demand and planned drought-response solutions, Lt Gen Werachon said.
The government set up 12 rainmaking units that covered 25 main river basins. They would operate from March 1 to Oct 31 to relieve drought and smoke haze and prevent hailstorms, the deputy government spokesman said. (TNA)
