SONGKHLA, Nov 26 (TNA) – Local authorities have beefed up
security measures in the commercial town of Hat Yai in southern Songkhla
province after two defence volunteers and an assistant village head were shot
dead by suspected insurgents.
Suspected insurgent militants on Monday attacked security
officials at a flea market in Songkhla’s Thepha district, three days after
three defence volunteers were fatally shot in nearby Pattani province.
Security officers have since carried out tightened measures
in Hat Yai to ensure safety for tourists and for commerce activities.
In the latest manhunt for the suspects, army officers
clashed with armed men while trying to raid a suspected hideout in Thepha
district. Two defence volunteers have
been injured in the shootout, police said.
Songkhla deputy police
superintendent Pol Col Anurut Im-arb said the manhunt would continue at several
other locations. (TNA)
