CHIANG MAI, Nov 13 (TNA) – Lanna lanterns and krathongs
(little vessels) made of natural or environmentally-friendly materials are hot
items due to high demand as Loy Krathong Festival, one of Thailand’s biggest
and most picturesque festivals, is approaching.
Loy Krathong is celebrated annually throughout Thailand on
the full moon day of the 12th month of traditional Thai calendar, which falls
on November 22 this year.
In Chiang Mai and other northern provinces of Lanna
civilization, it is held along with Yee Peng Festival.
The Yee Peng Festival, also known as the Lantern Festival,
is the time of the year that cities and towns are adorned with twinkling
lights, hanging from trees, buildings, and temples.
It is also the busiest time for lantern makers in Ban Sart
Luang village who have received soaring demand for charming lanterns and
krathongs made of natural materials.
One of the makers said lantern made of tree leaves had been
sold out as orders rose 30 percent compared with last year.
Ban Sart Luang now offers the only other choice of cloth
lanterns for buyers that will illuminate city’s thoroughfares during Loy
Krathong and Yee Peng festivals. (TNA)
