BANGKOK, June 26 (TNA) – Prime Minister and Defense Minister Gen. Prayut Chan-o-cha on Friday attended the 36th ASEAN Summit and other related summits via a teleconference, reiterating post-Covid-19 recovery through ASEAN’s cooperation mechanisms.
The 36th ASEAN Summit is the first in its history that takes place via a teleconference, hosted by Vietnam’s Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc as the 2020 ASEAN chair.
The Summit is aimed to promote cooperation among ASEAN member states in response to the spread of COVID-19, and to discuss the drafting of a post-COVID recovery plan.
Gen. Prayut delivered a statement to propose 3 post-COVID-19 approaches in driving ASEAN forward: 1) promoting genuine connectivity of ASEAN through acceleration of implementations under the Master Plan on ASEAN Connectivity 2025 (MPAC 2025); 2) enhancing ASEAN’s strength from within through economic integration and digital infrastructure investment; and 3) promoting ASEAN’s long-term immunity with the formulation of a post-COVID recovery plan, under which sustainable public health, food, and human security are to be focused.
Other than the plenary session of the ASEAN Summit, the Prime Minister will also attend the special session on woman empowerment in digital era, and the dialogues between ASEAN leaders and the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA), ASEAN Youth, and ASEAN Business Advisory Council (ASEAN-BAC).
