BANGKOK, March 11 (TNA) – Thai nationals in Italy are recommended to protect themselves and follow up on information on the Covid-19 situation after Italy announced the whole country under lockdown following a surge of coronavirus cases.
The Thai embassy in Rome reported that under the lockdown, people are banned from leaving towns and can go outside only for necessary travels like going to work and buying food. All social and public gatherings are cancelled, said Cherdkiat Atthakor, spokesman of the Foreign Ministry.
Cherdkiart said there are 7,000 Thais in Italy including those who married to Italians, students and travelers.
The foreign ministry will convene a meeting today with agencies concerned to help Thais residing in Italy and Iran, who have been affected by the virus outbreak.
The meeting will be chaired by Tana Weskosith, the deputy permanent secretary for foreign affairs. It is the third meeting since the outbreak occurred.
Regarding the Grand Princess cruise ship, which has docked in Oakland, California, he said Thai Consulate in Los Angeles reported that there are seven Thais on board. All of them are crew members and are safe in a separate room aboard.
Sick passengers are allowed to disembark for medical treatment at hospitals in California. Tourists and foreign crew stay on board, waiting for travelling home. (TNA)
