BANGKOK, Dec 25 (TNA) — The Thai Chamber of Commerce has proposed a bill to solve air pollution which its chair says is affecting the economy.
Kalin Sarasin, chairman of the Thai Chamber of Commerce, proposed the bill together with the signatures of about 10,000 supporters to House Speaker Chuan Leekpai at the parliament.
The bill called for the formation of a “clean air committee” for the control of air pollution. It comprises the prime minister as its chairman and concerned ministers as members. The committee will lay down policies and create local mechanisms to tackle those causing air pollution. The bill also set punishments on polluters.
“The ongoing problem of smog is affecting tourism and public health. Existing laws do not have a clear and effective solution,” Mr Kalin said.
Receiving the bill, Mr Chuan said he would forward it to the House of Representatives. He also suggested the Thai Chamber of Commerce discuss the idea with the government, especially the Interior Ministry that supervised local administrative organizations and other ministries tasked with pollution control.
It would be faster for the legislation if the government pushes for such a bill, Mr Chuan said. (TNA)
