LOEI, May 27 (TNA) – A proposed cable car for Phukradueng National Park has strong local support but faces opposition from some tourists concerned about environmental impact.
Phu Kradueng, in Thailand’s Loei province, is a popular mesa-like mountain known for its challenging treks, cool climate, and diverse ecosystems. Open typically October-May, it’s a significant hiking destination for Thais.
A proposed cable car project aims to increase accessibility, supported by over 90% of locals for economic benefits. However, some tourists and environmentalists oppose it, citing concerns about ecological impact and over-development. The project is currently undergoing feasibility and environmental assessments.
Locals display signs supporting the project. The head of the pro-cable car committee stated that local support has surged, especially after the district chief observed sustainable tourism models in Vietnam and Malaysia.
The project has also alleviated worries for porters. They feel more secure now, citing both government support plans. Moreover, fewer new generations are choosing this physically demanding career, having more alternatives. They’ve also witnessed veteran porters enduring deformed bones and poor health from long years of heavy work. -819 (TNA)
