BANGKOK, Sept 11 (TNA) – A protest leader has vowed to go ahead with the plan to stage the next anti-government protest at Thammasat University after the university management announced to ban the planned rally at the university’s campus.
Parit Chivarak, one of the protest leader said on his Facebook page that the protest will be held as planned in defiance of the university’s order.
He also slammed the decision, writing “Thammasat University belongs to the people, not a few servants of dictators.”
Earlier, Parit and other core leaders announced that they would gather at Thammasat University’s Tha Prachan campus at 2 pm on September 19, camp out for the night and then march to the Government House at 8 am on the following day.
Thammasat University on Thursday issued a statement rejecting the request for the gathering on its campus’s ground.
The statement says the protest groups have not followed the university’s guideline for demonstration which is intended to promote freedom of expression and other constitutional rights.
The planned demonstration is seen as a pivotal point in the recent anti-government movement. Some of its elements have also called for monarchical reform.
Pol General Chakthip Chaichinda, head of the Royal Thai Police, told reporters on Thursday that police had no plan to utilize suppression tactics in handling the protest as some opposition politicians suggest.
He urged the protesters to respect the law and other people’s rights. (TNA)
