MAE HONG SON, Jan 25 (TNA) – Ethnic Karen people in
Thailand’s northern Mae Hong Son province compete in rice pounding contest as
part of a cultural fair.
Contestants representing their villages displayed their
skills in pounding rice, a traditional way to take off the hard outer shell of
rice using mortar and pestle.
Each team had 15 minutes to finish the task of pounding five
kilograms of rice.
Mae Suad village team came up on top with the best result.
Another highlight of the fair is Karen chili, known as one
of the spiciest peppers with unique aroma.
Sob Moei is the largest producer of Karen chilli, said
District Chief Pa-ob Binsa-ard. He
invited people to experience cultural heritage of the hill tribe and taste farm
produce native to Mae Hong Son in the fair running until Sunday. (TNA)
