CHIANG MAI, Oct 22 (TNA) – Local vendors at Muang Mai Market in Chiang Mai have urged authorities to expedite the removal of flood-damaged garbage that has been piling up on the roadside for over a week.
Piles of garbage, a mix of flood debris and market waste, have been a persistent eyesore along the roadside in front of the fruit market within Muang Mai Market. The area, popular among foreign tourists, especially Chinese visitors who frequent the fruit market, is now marred by the foul smell and presence of flies.
Another significant garbage pile has been spotted on the footpath near the Ping River, just before the footbridge of the Doi Lam Yai Flower Market. The unsightly scene has marred the city’s appearance and left a negative impression on passersby.
Despite round-the-clock cleanup efforts by authorities, the vendors argue that as the city’s face, the garbage should have been cleared more quickly.
Meanwhile, at the Warorot Market, which was severely flooded, vendors have received a one-week rent waiver from the market management to help them recover from the losses incurred. The market is now operating as usual, except for the basement which remains closed for cleanup.
However, some riverside restaurants near the Chan Som Bridge have been forced to remain closed. Although the water level in the Ping River has receded, the restaurants’ floors are still covered in mud, making them unusable until a thorough cleanup is completed. -819 (TNA)
