BANGKOK, April 29 (TNA) — The Department of Medical Services organized its first two-day training session on the medical use of marijuana for doctors and pharmacists who will obtain licenses for marijuana extract prescription.
Opening the training at Amari Don Muang Airport Hotel in Bangkok, Dr Somsak Akkhasilp, director-general of the department, said the training on April 29 and 30 was designed for doctors, dentists and pharmacists of public and private hospitals so that they would have knowledge and understanding to appropriately apply marijuana products for medical benefits.
The first class comprised 200 trainees. The department would organize one session per month from now on and there would be altogether six classes of trainees, he said.
The training covered the history of marijuana use for medical purposes in Thailand and other countries, the chemical content of marijuana that had treatment effects, the application and benefits of marijuana for medical treatment and recreation, and the diseases that could be treated with marijuana such as epilepsy, chemo-related nausea and vomiting, stiff muscles related to demyelinating disease, Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease, Dr Somsak said.
“After the training, there will be an examination. Those who pass 60% of the exam are considered as completing the training and will be certified as the medical personnel who are capable of using marijuana extract properly and safely,” he said. (TNA)
