TAK, April 2 (TNA) – Thailand has sought cooperation from
neighbouring Myanmar to fight haze problem caused by forest burning and farming
activities in border areas.
Utilizing the local-level mechanism, a Thai army unit in Mae
Sot, Tak province, called an urgent meeting of Thailand-Myanmar Township Border
Committee on Tuesday.
Col Asanha Phulsuwan who led the Thai delegation said the
meeting discussed the toxic haze that had choked residents of Thailand’s north
for months.
The harmful smog situation had been exacerbated by smoke
from forest fires in Myanmar, with a recent satellite image on Sunday showing
about 1,000 hot spots in the neighboring country, as well as those in Laos.
Thai local officials in other border areas have also
coordinated with their Myanmar counterparts via Thai-Myanmar Township Border
Committee, asking for measures against outdoor burning and forest fires.
Col Asanha said Myanmar officials vowed to control burning
and extinguish bushfires.(TNA)
