BANGKOK, Feb 27 (TNA) – The Government Pharmaceutical
Organization (GPO) grows cannabis for the first time after the country’s
Narcotics Act was amended to allow its use for medical and research purposes.
The GPO launched the first phase of cannabis cultivation
aiming to produce the first lot of medical marijuana for clinical trial in
July.
Public Health Minister Piyasakol Sakolsatayadorn said the GPO
planned to produce 2,500 bottles of CBD sublingual drops for the trial on
volunteers.
Looking to tap medical benefits of cannabis, Thailand
recently promulgated the new Narcotics Act, permitting state organizations,
pharmacists, dentists, veterinarians, practitioners of traditional Thai
medicine and certified folk healers to possess medical marijuana and conduct
research.
Registered communities or social-enterprises as well as
agricultural cooperatives are also allowed to do so under the supervision of
approved state organizations.
A hybrid type of cannabis seeds were planted at an GPO facility
in Pathumthani using aeroponics system. (TNA)
